Venture Outdoors Conference - 3rd Dec 09

CAAN is delighted to announce that work is underway for the new project ‘Venture Outdoors’. The 3 year project will address the barriers currently discouraging those from the disabled, minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities from taking part in outdoor recreation.

The programme will include 4 key areas; training, marketing, participation and building bridges between the communities and providers of outdoor recreation. Work to date has included;
· Rebranding of the project
· Development of a PR and Marketing Plan
· Establishment of a Steering Group
· Organisation of 4 pilot taster sessions - the delivery of the taster sessions will comprise of outdoor activities in an attempt to start to break down some of the barriers to participation in outdoor recreation.
· Building Relationships - a series of meetings have been held with key stakeholders in terms of deciding the best ways forward to producing accurate, available and appropriate information for these communities.

Maeve Curran, Venture Outdoors Marketing Officer, highlighted, “CAAN has great hopes for the ‘Venture Outdoors’ project, and the role it will play in engaging with disabled, minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities in outdoor recreation.”

This year’s conference is designed to raise awareness of good practice programmes happening locally and in the United Kingdom that strive towards engaging disabled, minority ethnic and disadvantaged individuals and groups in outdoor recreation. The conference also marks the launch of the Venture Outdoors project. We are delighted to welcome Mark Pollock (www.markpollock.com) who will discuss his experiences after losing his sight and then racing in the world’s most extreme environments deserts, oceans, mountains and Polar Regions.
